My Husband’s Cousin Came to Stay with Us Temporarily with Her Son – If Only I Had Known It Was All a Trap.
When my husband, Derek, told me that his cousin, Daisy, and her son, Patrick, needed a place to stay for a few weeks, I didn’t even hesitate. He said they were struggling and just needed a little help to get back on their feet.
“Of course,” I said. “Family is family.”
Before I married Derek, I had financial struggles too. I fought hard to get out of student debt and find stability. If I hadn’t received help along the way, I don’t know how I would have managed.
So what kind of person would I be if I didn’t help my husband’s family?
That was a month ago. If only I had known what I was getting myself into.
The First Signs Something Was Wrong
When Daisy and Patrick arrived, everything seemed fine. At first, Daisy was polite but distant. I figured she was just shy. She wasn’t particularly warm toward me, but with Derek?
She was a completely different person.
She was lively, laughing at his jokes, and talking to him with a familiarity that didn’t seem natural between cousins. At first, I ignored the discomfort growing inside me.
After all, they were family.
Right?
Patrick, however, was a different story. At first, he seemed like a typical eight-year-old, full of energy. But within days, he turned into a whirlwind of chaos.
Crumbs everywhere, sticky handprints on the walls, toys scattered across the floor like landmines.
But the worst part?
He didn’t respect me.
One time, I asked him to clean up his toys, and instead, he threw a tantrum, tossing pillows off the couch.
“You’re not my mom! I don’t have to listen to you!” he yelled.
That night, I finally had enough.
“Patrick,” I said firmly. “You are a guest here. Act like one. This is not your home.”
His response sent a chill down my spine.
“No, Rebecca,” he spat out my name. “My mom said this is our home now.”
I froze.
Excuse me?
I tried convincing myself that it was just a misunderstanding. Maybe Daisy had said something to make the transition easier for him, and he misinterpreted it.
But those words kept replaying in my head.
The Moment of Truth
A week later, Derek’s sister, Ashley, came over for lunch to invite us to a family dinner.
That’s when everything started to unravel.
In the middle of our conversation, she looked at me with a warm smile.
“You’re a saint for letting them stay here, Becca.”
I laughed and shook my head.
“Oh, stop! It’s Derek’s cousin and nephew. Why wouldn’t I let them stay?”
Her fork froze in midair.
“Wait… He didn’t tell you?”
My chest tightened.
“Tell me what? Ashley? Derek?”
She turned to Derek, who suddenly seemed very interested in his lemonade.
“Oh my God, Becca…” she whispered. “You really don’t know…”
“Don’t know what?” My voice trembled as the sinking feeling in my gut turned into full-blown panic.
Ashley took a deep breath and then dropped the bombshell:
“Daisy isn’t our cousin, Becca.”
“What?”
“She’s Derek’s ex-girlfriend. And Patrick… is his son.”
Betrayal and Lies
The world tilted.
I had to grip the table to steady myself.
“This… this can’t be true.”
Ashley looked at me with sympathy.
“I thought you knew, Becca! Derek told the whole family that he had explained everything to you. Our mom made it clear he needed to tell you before you two got married!”
My eyes locked onto Derek’s.
He didn’t deny it.
And that’s when I knew:
He had known all along.
He had lied to me for years.
The Final Confrontation
That night, I called Derek into the living room.
He sat across from me, shoulders slumped.
“Start talking.”
He exhaled deeply, avoiding my gaze.
“Yes, Daisy is my ex,” he admitted. “And Patrick is my son.”
His words hit me like a punch to the gut.
“You lied to me.” My voice shook. “You looked me in the eye and lied. You let me turn my office into a bedroom for your son without telling me the truth?”
“I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“So you chose to deceive me instead.”
He tried to justify it, saying he had always paid child support, that Daisy and Patrick needed help, that he was afraid of losing me.
But all I heard were excuses.
“If you had told me the truth from the start, maybe I could have understood. But now… now all I see is a man who betrayed me.”
Derek sighed. “I’ll tell Daisy and Patrick to leave tonight if that’s what you want.”
I let out a dry laugh.
“They should have left the second this charade began.”
What Happens Now?
The next few days were unbearable.
Daisy avoided me completely, and Patrick stayed in his room, unusually quiet.
Derek scrambled to fix things, arranging for Daisy and Patrick to move into a rental while also trying to convince me to stay with him.
But my trust in him was shattered.
Before Daisy left, I confronted her one last time.
“Why did you go along with this lie?”
She flushed with embarrassment, avoiding my eyes.
“I didn’t want to lie,” she muttered. “But Derek thought it would be easier this way. I’m sorry. I never wanted to cause problems.”
Her apology didn’t erase the betrayal. But it did make one thing clear: Derek was the true mastermind behind all of this.
When Daisy and Patrick finally left, the house felt unnervingly silent.
Derek tried everything to win me back. “I’ll change, I promise.”
But I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay.
I spent weeks talking to my best friend, Sharon, trying to figure out what to do.
“Just make sure you know what you want, Becca,” she said. “If you decide to stay, make sure it’s because you believe you can trust him again.”
Then, one night, I called Derek into the living room.
He sat down, tense.
“I’m not ready to forgive you.”
He opened his mouth, but I held up my hand.
“But I’m willing to try.”
The relief on his face was obvious, but I wasn’t here to comfort him.
“This is your last chance, Derek.” My voice was firm. “No more lies. No more half-truths. If you want to save this marriage, you’ll have to earn my trust back.”
“I will,” he whispered. “I promise.”
A New Reality
Rebuilding this marriage won’t be easy.
And honestly, I don’t know if it’s possible.
But one thing I’ve learned: I will never ignore red flags again.
Derek may be trying to fix things. But this time, he’s on thin ice.
And if he thinks I’ll fall for his lies again…
He’s dead wrong.
