5 Warning Signs of Stroke in Young Adults

In recent years, the rise in stroke cases among young adults has made it increasingly important to recognize its common symptoms. Many people believe that strokes only affect the elderly, but that is far from the truth.
Several factors contribute to strokes in the younger population, including unhealthy lifestyles, chronic stress, drug use, estrogen-containing birth control pills, and the growing prevalence of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
The American Heart Association reports that the number of strokes among young adults has increased by 40 percent in recent years. In fact, about 10-15 percent of strokes affect individuals between the ages of 18 and 45.
Dr. Khurram Nasir, Chief of Cardiovascular Prevention and Wellness at the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center in Texas, states, “Although the medical community has made significant progress in reducing the severity and complications of stroke through early intervention, these efforts won’t be effective if patients fail to recognize the symptoms.”
“Time is critical in stroke treatment. The sooner people recognize the signs, the greater the chance of minimizing long-term disability caused by stroke,” he added.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or interrupted.
Strokes can cause brain damage and even death. In fact, stroke is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide.
Some stroke symptoms in young adults include:
1. Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body: Weakness, numbness, or tingling—especially on one side of the body (face, arm, or leg)—may indicate a blocked artery or brain hemorrhage.
2. Difficulty speaking or understanding speech: Slurred speech or trouble expressing words is a common sign of stroke.
3. Sudden, severe headache: An intense, sudden headache can be a warning sign of a stroke.
4. Dizziness and loss of balance: A sudden inability to walk or loss of coordination may be related to damage to the cerebellum—the part of the brain that manages balance, movement, and posture.
5. Vision problems: Blurred vision, double vision, vision loss in one eye, and sensitivity to light can also be stroke symptoms in young adults.
If you or someone you know experiences any of these major stroke symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
